Dominical, Uvita and Ojochal that make up the Costa Ballena, these laid-back spread-out villages are all unique and completely different in their appearances, with a diverse multicultural expat population.

Dominical

Is famous for its laid-back “Pura Vida” ambiance and best surfing conditions, friendly locals, a one-strip main road leading to the town’s beach promenade.

Uvita

Only 17km toward the south is some sort of the capital of Costa Ballena, all facilities in two town centers, one North and the other South of the bridge, Farmer’s market, Marina Ballena National Park-the world-famous whale tale, waterfalls and beaches.

Ojochal

Is the culinary enclave along the Costa Ballena with influences ranging Mediterranean to Indonesian and its home to a patisserie, a pizzeria and farmer’s market. There are many great choices to name them all, but here are the top of most recommended to have a divine experience.

Le French Cafe

(In Uvita, 300m. off Hwy.34 toward Parque Nacional Marino Ballena)

Softly lit with candles and lanterns, the intimate spot is perfect for a special night. Beef, chicken and fish orders surpass the ordinary and feature flavors and cooking styles from countries around the world. Even the cocktails are a step up from most. Don’t leave without indulging in the restaurant’s sweet and slightly spicy chocolate cake, “the Devil’s Fork”.

Tons of people gush over CITRUS north of Hwy.34.

The restaurant offers a fine-dining experience, mainly French-inspired, in a sophisticated space with a laid-back family-friendly vibe. The unique and eclectic décor includes funky pendant lights, tree-trunk tabletops and modern chairs scattered throughout the dining room and outdoor courtyard.

Tilapia El Pavon

To enjoy an authentically Tico day in the country follow a winding river road up to this family-run tilapia fish farm, you can work up an appetite on a short hike to a spectacular waterfall with a swimming hole. (bring your suit and binoculars for bird-watching then catch your own tilapia).

The cooks at the open-air wooden restaurant overlooking the tidily kept fishponds will fry up your fish in 10 minutes and present in whole or filleted with rice, salad, yucca and patacones (fried mashed plantains).

This unassuming roadside cattery offers local cuisine with giant flavors at tiny prices with amazing sunsets views. Spring for a “Pescado Entero” and pair with a refreshing smoothie.

(Three Sixty Boutique Hotel) one preferred by many expats when they visit Ojochal. The small menu offers a few fresh breakfast and lunch options, five exquisite dinner entrees and delectable desserts. The restaurant follows the concept of a full rotation and complete transformation of the cuisine. The menu adjusts to reflect each season’s prime produce and protein availability

All of their kitchen sourcing is local and fresh their team visiting local produce markets and fishermen each morning to assure the freshest ingredients available for their chef. The superior quality food is matched by an excellent view. Visit just before sunset so you can take in the sight of the endless ocean and a lush rainforest canopy while dinning on the open-air patio perched on the side of a mountain.

Fusion Restaurant and Bar

Fusion is a Costa Rica restaurant that offers a wide variety of international and ethnic cuisines. Using the organic produce from a family hacienda and the seafood from local fisheries, they provide the highest quality standards. Faithful to the meaning of the word FUSION (blending of different techniques and tastes) the style of dinning offers you nothing less than exceptional taste, quality and presentation. This is a modern gastronomical trend, which prepares traditional recipes with exotic international dishes. Sibu Caffe

Serving the best coffee for miles around, this little cafe hides in the strip mall part of Uvita. Latte art, chunky brownies and homemade lemon juice are all on the menu. Want something more sustainable? The hardworking and friendly couple are also making excellent salads, thin-and-crispy pizza pie veggie juice and fruit smoothies. They also selling their own craft beer, Sibu Russian Imperial Stout.

Scala

(Escaleras Village, ~ 30 km West from Tres Rios de Coronado village toward Dominical, 1km off from Costanera Hwy)

Probably the newest restaurant opened in the region. Situated in the Escaleras Village Mall.

Café Mono Congo

Pull up a counter stool or sit at a table on the popular riverside terrace at this friendly café with creative vegetarian and gluten-free dishes, organic juices, local and imported beers on tap, kombuchas and herbal teas. Desserts are not only gluten-free they are addictive. The chocolate with papaya to make a rich mousse filling for a date, almond and coconut crust. Famous for smash avocados on toasted gluten-free bagel with goat cheese; chocolate papaya pie and excellent organic coffee.
